Ambient Weather WS-YG501 Galileo Thermometer, Hygrometer and Glass Fluid Barometer

The Galileo thermometer consists of a sealed glass tube filled with liquid (paraffin oil) and several floating bubbles. The bubbles are glass spheres filled with a colored liquid mixture, and each has a metal tag attached that indicates a temperature. These metal tags are calibrated counterweights, with slightly different weights to account for the fact that the hand-blown glass bubbles are not exactly the same size and shape.

The bubbles are calibrated by adding a certain amount of fluid to them, ensuring they have the exact same density. As a result, each bubble differs very slightly in density (the ratio of mass to volume) from the others, with the density of all of them being very close to the density of the surrounding liquid.

When the temperature of the air outside the thermometer changes, so does the temperature of the liquid surrounding the bubbles. As the temperature of the liquid changes, it either expands or contracts, thereby changing its density. At any given density, some of the bubbles will float and others will sink, with the bubble that sinks the most indicating the approximate current temperature.

The overall height of the Galileo thermometer is 11.4 inches, while the barometer height is 5.9 inches. There are 5 glass balls in the thermometer, with a temperature range of 64ºF to 80ºF. The glass barometer globe features a frosted world map, and the water level in the spout indicates the current air pressure. A low level of liquid in the spout corresponds to high pressure and fair weather, while a high level indicates bad weather.

The barometer is housed in an attractive wood base, with a wood-framed hygrometer. Distilled water is recommended for the barometer, although not required (water must be added to the barometer). Food coloring can be added to customize the water barometer color (not included).
